We (Sandy and Rodney) moved to the Verde Valley from the Midwest in 1997. Rodney was having health issues and needed to leave the family business of building custom cabinetry so he allowed his brothers to buy him out.

As a family with young children, we couldn’t afford for Uncle Sam to take their cut of the business sale so we knew we had to reinvest the money into another business. Rodney thought a storage facility would be a good investment. I thought he was crazy! Why would anyone pay to store their belongings? I did not realize that the homes in our area are not built with much storage capabilities beyond a few closets and a garage. That was the beginning of Rising Sun Mini Storage!

Anyone moving here from the Midwest realizes quickly that the cost of living compared to the wages paid is very unbalanced! My salary as a school bus driver wasn’t going to make ends meet. Rodney was forced to go from stay-at-home dad to real estate agent, which was something he could do with his limited physical abilities. As Rodney became busier with real estate, I chose to take over running the storage facility full time so he could focus on his new career.

Although I did not ever plan on running the storage facility business, I found that I really enjoy helping people with this business. I can offer very affordable storage for their valuables by keeping my rates on the low side. As I looked around at our competition, I felt that many storage facilities were over-priced and they gouged their customers because mini-storage is in high demand and there are times that spaces can be difficult to find.

What I discovered over the years and is just amazing about this business is that all types of people need extra storage space! Businesses need a place to store files, people need a temporary place to store valuables when moving out of their homes or moving into a new home. I’ve had customers use my facility because they travel for extended periods of time. There are organizations that need to store inventory.

I enjoy chatting with my customers and getting to know them. We have the most interesting people living in our area! I’ve had customers leave only to come back a year or two later. They also send their friends, family, and coworkers to me because they know they will be treated as people and not a number.
